Phillip Cho, a US Army sniper in the 11th Airborne Division based in Alaska. At sniper training, we focus on things like range estimation, target detection, and precision marksmanship, the last of which is the most heavily portrayed aspect in Hollywood movies. For me, the easiest part is probably shooting because I was already a good shot before I became a sniper. Phillip Cho, a US Army sniper in the 11th Airborne Division based in Alaska. What I've preached for years now is that in order to be a successful sniper in the Arctic, you have to have imagination. We use different procedures in the Arctic versus the jungles of Asia or the deserts of the Middle East. Like other environments, water is a priority. The Arctic can be an insatiable beast and chews up some of the strongest soldiers that I've seen.

The US Army's new JPMRC training rotation in Alaska prepares soldiers to fight in frigid conditions. Many skills related to Arctic combat had atrophied, generals said. On the flip side, JPMRC also does an annual rotation in Hawaii, training soldiers to fight in the wet, humid jungle. US Army Alaska officially became the 11th Airborne Division, a newly reactivated unit, with the focus on Pacific and Arctic combat. The general told reporters US Army Alaska had "sort of lost the Arctic ethos" because of its focus on counterinsurgency in the Middle East.

This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Out on the snow-covered Alaskan tundra, US Army Pacific is pushing its soldiers to prepare to fight in subzero temperatures and hostile, unpredictable environments. "It's a harsh environment," Maj. Gen. Brian S. Eifler told Business Insider in an in-person interview at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks. Some told Business Insider the Arctic was the most difficult environment to fight in, while others noted it took a specific type of mindset to survive there, let alone excel. Maj. Joseph Gaskin told Business Insider, explaining that "we don't have all the answers for this environment."

But amid the horrors are lessons, two US Army generals recently told Business Insider during an interview at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks, Alaska. Drones continue to be a dominant element of the war in Ukraine as both Ukraine and Russia ramp up production and development. Before drone warfare became as widespread and prevalent as it is in Ukraine today, troops had smaller ranges to worry about. And the range at which troops need to be able to suppress munitions and long-range capabilities has changed as well. Joshua KleinholzThe use of electronic warfare and sophisticated air defenses in Ukraine, too, has the Army rethinking what future wars could look like.

A US Air Force Osprey crashed off the coast of Japan on November 29, killing all eight Airmen aboard. It's the latest in a string of helicopter and tiltrotor crashes this year. Seven crashes around the world have so far killed at least 30 American service members and injured over 40 more. None of these incidents occurred during combat or were the result of enemy fire; almost all took place during some sort of training mission. Mick Ryan, the author and a strategist, says militaries need to "come to grips" with what is coming. The scene comes from a new novel, "White Sun War: The Campaign for Taiwan," written by a former military officer. "That is especially the case when the ratio of humans to autonomous systems in militaries is going to flip," Ryan told Insider. "We are not at the point yet where robotic systems are able to match humans in decision making," Ryan said. And these autonomous systems will have many similar flaws. "
The US Army has temporarily grounded all its aviation units except those on "critical missions." The order follows two mid-air collisions in Alaska and Kentucky that killed 12 soldiers. Units will remain grounded until they complete extra training, the army said. The suspension is effective immediately and grounds all aircraft except those "participating in critical missions," an Army statement said on Friday, according to the Associated Press. The incident followed another fatal collision in March in which two Black Hawk medical evacuation helicopters crashed and killed nine soldiers.
Two U.S. Army helicopters returning from a training flight crashed in Alaska on Thursday with four people aboard, killing three soldiers and injuring the fourth, Army officials said. The Army’s 11th Airborne Division confirmed the deaths late Thursday, saying that the two AH-64 Apache helicopters had crashed near Healy, Alaska, which is more than 200 miles north of Anchorage. Two of the four soldiers were declared dead at the crash site, and a third died on the way to a hospital in Fairbanks, it said. “This is an incredible loss for these soldiers’ families, their fellow soldiers, and for the division,” Maj. Gen. Brian Eifler, the division’s commanding general, said in a statement. John M. Pennell, a spokesman for 11th Airborne Division, said that he did not yet have details on the injured soldier’s condition.
